Tasting & Selection

Wine lover or not, upon tasting a glass of vintage Bordeaux you will instantly spot the distinct difference in quality to the ‘New World' reds (from the likes of Australia and California), that seem to have become so popular.

When selecting wine for laying down, traditional wisdom is to opt for 1st Growth Bordeaux. Buying a good vintage year from one of Bordeaux's top Châteaux usually limits risk. While this approach has proven to be quite prudent over the years, there are alternatives, which are just as rewarding.

There are only five Chateâux officially classified as 1st Growths (Lafite Rothschild, Margaux, Latour, Haut-Brion, and Mouton Rothschild), these are situated on the left bank of the Garonne River. Châteaux Le Pin, Petrus and Cheval Blanc (on the right bank) are considered to be of 1st Growth quality and have a proven track record.

Other wines that can be considered from the Bordeaux region are the 2nd Growths, better known as ‘Super Seconds'. These are the likes of Châteaux Léoville Las Cases, Cos d'Estournel, Léoville Barton, Montrose and Ducru-Beaucaillou.
