1855 Classifications

In 1855, Napoleon III, emperor of France, decided to hold a Universal Exposition in Paris (equivalent to a modern day world's fair) and wanted all the country's wines exhibited. The Chamber of Commerce in Bordeaux were instructed to arrange the exhibition. The members of the chamber passed the buck and asked the Syndicate of Courtiers, an organisation of wine merchants, to draw up an exact and complete list of all the red wines of the Gironde that specifies in which class they belonged.
